Ingredients

Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full listing of ingredients, instructions, notes, and estimated nutritional information.

  • Butter – You’ll need melted butter for this recipe. I use salted butter, but you can use unsalted butter if you prefer.
  • Sugars – This recipe uses a mixture of both granulated and brown sugar.
  • Vanilla extract – I love to use my homemade vanilla extract in my baking recipes, especially. You can also use your favorite good quality store-bought.
  • Eggs – Allow your eggs to reach room temperature for better blending into the batter.
  • Flour – This recipe uses self-rising flour.
  • Pecans – The pecans add crunch and flavor to these bars. However, you can easily substitute with another nut such as walnuts if preferred or replace with chocolate chips if you need to avoid the use of all nuts.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Preheat the oven to 300º F. Butter a 9 x 13 baking dish. I also like to line my baking dish with parchment paper at the edges of the baking dish. This lets me easily lift the Pecan Chewies from the baking dish to finish cooling and to cut into bars. If you use the parchment, you’ll also want to butter the parchment paper.

Place into the oven and bake until the Pecan Chewies are light brown and do not move when the baking pan is moved on the oven rack, about 45 minutes.

Allow to cool in the pan. Alternately, if you used the parchment paper lining in your baking dish, allow them to cool for about 5 minutes in the pan and then carefully lift them out of the baking dish using the extended edges of the parchment paper. Place them onto a wire rack and let them cool completely.

FAQs

Why did my pecan pie not gel? ›

It may be running too cool and not be sufficiently hot for the custard magic to take place. Employ the pie-shield solution to save whatever dessert is already in there, and then get yourself a reliable oven thermometer to ensure proper preheating in the future. After all, consistency is everything in baking.

What to do with runny pecan pie? ›

If your pecan pie is runny, simply bake it a bit longer, even up to 20 minutes. When the pie has been thoroughly baked, you'll be able to give it a gentle shake, and the middle will appear firm — if you've ever baked a pumpkin pie, it's the same concept.

Will pecan pie thicken as it cools? ›

The filling continues to cook and will fully set as the pie cools, so giving a pie plenty of time at room temperature before serving is important.

What happens when you chew bread for a long time? ›

It breaks down starch in bread into simpler sugars (maltose) which give a sweet taste, since you are chewing for a longer while, more time and more mixing, for enzymatic action and hence you perceive it as sweet.

What is the taste of bread after chewing? ›

Amylase, as well as being found in pancreatic fluid, is also found in saliva, therefore when you are chewing the bread, the amylase in saliva interacts with the starch in the bread, breaking it down to produce simple sugars - these simple sugars hence make the bread taste sweet.

What is chewy bread called? ›

Baguette. The longer, thinner cousin of a French bread loaf, the baguette is a chewy bread with a thick crust that's traditionally made solely from water, yeast, white flour, and salt.

Why did my pecan pie turn out soupy? ›

If your pecan pie is still a little soupy, it simply means you need to bake it more. The center or filling of a pecan pie needs time to thicken and set properly. Here are several reasons why your pecan pie is too soupy or runny. Was the oven at the correct temperature?

Why is my pecan pie still jiggly? ›

If your pie is soupy, you probably didn't bake it long enough. Baking time can vary with this recipe, so it's best to give it a good jiggle before you take it out. If it's very jiggly, pop it back in the oven for 20 minutes or so until it's set.

Why is my pecan pie gooey? ›

This pie is essentially a custard pie that means a runny center is a result of under baking. Most recipes suggest baking your pie for at least 60 to 70 minutes at 350 degrees to get the perfect pecan pie. However, depending on the oven, a pie can take more than 75 minutes.
